General Information
Learning the laws regulating the use of firearms is a must for responsible ownership. Local regulations differ and laws vary from state to state. Citizens must check with the jurisdiction where the firearm is to be used.
The Sheriff or Police Chief and her staff are required to follow strict state guidelines when performing the necessary background checks for Concealed Handgun Permits (CHP). Due to the nature of the detailed due diligence, appointment times and processing times can take multiple weeks. During the new application process, you will be required to schedule an appointment. Please note that you will be asked to pay now to reserve your appointment.
The application must be submitted to the Broomfield Police Department if the applicant resides within the jurisdiction of the Broomfield Police Department, or the applicant maintains a secondary residence or owns or leases real property used by the applicant in a business within the jurisdiction of the Broomfield Police Department.
- For a NEW CHP, you will be asked to schedule a fingerprint appointment. Your application is not complete until your fingerprints are submitted.
- If you are applying for a CHP RENEWAL, you may not apply until 120 days prior to the expiration date shown on your current CHP.

- Once you have submitted your RENEWAL application, it will be processed by our team. Upon your applications acceptance you will recieve a confirmation email informing you of our walk-in appointment process. Any walk-in appointments without a confirmation email will not be seen, you must have a confirmation from our office PRIOR to a walk-in. RENEWALS ONLY.
- LATE RENEWAL applications will be accepted up to 6 months after the expiration date shown on the current CHP. If your permit is more than 6 months expired then you must submit a new application, to include a valid training certificate less than 10 years old.
- If your CHP is lost, stolen or destroyed, you must contact the agency where the permit was issued within 3 business days.
Effective July 1, 2025, ALL RENEWAL and NEW Concealed Handgun Permit applicants must provide a training certificate from an instructor who has been verified with a Colorado Sheriff’s department.
Renewals: Effective July 1, 2025, refresher training is required per House bill 24-1174. Training must be completed in person and include at least 2 hours of instruction, a live-fire exercise and a written exam. Training must be taught by an instructor who has been verified with a Colorado Sheriff's department.
We will continue honoring the following documents in lieu of a training certificate: Evidence of participation in organized shooting competitions, evidence of current military service or current certification as a peace officer, evidence of certification as a verified instructor in Colorado, proof of honorable discharge from a branch of the United States armed forces or retirement from a Colorado law enforcement agency with pistol qualifications within the past 10 years.

Completing the Application
The application packet is to be read thoroughly and the application completed in full. The application must be submitted to the Broomfield Police Department if the applicant resides within the jurisdiction of the Broomfield Police Department, or the applicant maintains a secondary residence or owns or leases real property used by the applicant in a business within the jurisdiction of the Broomfield Police Department.
Requirements
The applicant must meet the following criteria:
- Is a legal resident of the State of Colorado (Valid Colorado ID or License required). A person, who is a member of the Armed Forces and is stationed pursuant to permanent duty station orders at a military installation in this state, and a member of the person’s immediate family living in Colorado, shall be deemed to be a legal resident of the State of Colorado.
- Is twenty-one years of age or older.
- Is not ineligible to possess a firearm pursuant to section C.R.S. 18-12-108 or Federal Law.
- Has not been convicted of perjury under section C.R.S. 18-8-503, in relation to information provided or deliberately omitted on a permit application.
- Does not chronically and habitually use alcoholic beverages to the extent that the applicant’s normal faculties are impaired.
- Is not an unlawful user of or addicted to a controlled substance as defined in section C.R.S. 18- 18-102(5). Whether an applicant is an unlawful user of or addicted to a controlled substance shall be determined as provided in Federal Law and Regulations.
- Federal Law 18 USC 922(g) (3) prohibits any person who is an unlawful user of, or addicted to, any controlled substance from shipping, transporting, receiving, or possessing firearms or ammunition. Marijuana is listed in the Controlled Substances Act as a Schedule I controlled substance, and there are no exceptions in Federal Law for marijuana purportedly used for medicinal purposes, even if such use is sanctioned by State Law. Further, Federal Law 18 USC 922(d) (3) makes it unlawful for any person to sell or otherwise dispose of any firearm or ammunition to any person knowing or having reasonable cause to believe that such person is an unlawful user of, or addicted to, a controlled substance.
TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
The applicant must demonstrate competence with a handgun by submitting the following:
- Evidence of experience with a firearm through participation in organized shooting competitions or current military service.
- Evidence that, at the time the application is submitted, the applicant is a certified instructor.
- Proof of honorable discharge from a branch of the United States Armed Forces within the three years preceding submittal of the application.
- Proof of honorable discharge from a branch of the United States Armed Forces that reflects pistol qualifications obtained within the ten years preceding submittal of the application.
- A certificate showing retirement from a Colorado Law Enforcement Agency that reflects pistol qualifications obtained within the ten years preceding submittal of the application.
- A training certificate from a "handgun training class"
- New applications: A training certificate from a concealed handgun training class taught by an instructor verified by a Colorado Sheriff’s Department obtained within one year preceding submittal of the application.
- Renewal applications: A training certificate from a concealed handgun refresher class taught by an instructor verified by a Colorado Sheriff’s Department obtained within 6 months prior to submitting the renewal application.
Certificates must contain the applicant’s name, course name, date of the course and the instructor’s printed name, original signature, and verified instructor information, including number (if assigned) and county of verification. The certificate can not have nickname. The name must match your ID.
REQUIRED FORM OF IDENTIFICATION:
Accepted forms of identification are:
- A valid Colorado Driver's License OR
- A Valid Colorado state issued Identification Card
PROOF OF RESIDENCY
Accepted forms of residency are:
- Lease agreement or mortgage statement
- Utility Bill
- Notarized affidavit of residency
PASSPORT STYLE PHOTO
All applicants must submit a passport style photo for the permit card. The photograph must meet the following requirements:
- Color photograph of the applicant’s full face & head, including hair and facial features
- Use a plain colored or neutral background
- Do not wear a hat, glasses, earbuds, or other objects
- The photo must be RECENT - taken within the thirty days immediately preceding submittal of the permit application
